Functions of Oil Tank

The core functions of a transformer tank can be summarized as "containment, heat dissipation, protection, and support."

Containment and Insulation: The tank acts as the transformer's "shell," holding the transformer oil inside, with the iron core and windings completely immersed. The transformer oil plays a crucial insulating role, ensuring sufficient electrical strength between live parts and from live parts to ground.

Heat Dissipation and Cooling: During operation, the iron core and windings generate significant heat. This heat is transferred to the transformer oil. The hot oil rises and dissipates heat into the air through the tank walls or externally attached radiators (such as panel-type radiators or coolers). The cooled oil then returns to the bottom of the tank, creating a circulation loop that effectively controls the transformer's temperature rise.

Protection: As a sealed enclosure, the tank effectively isolates internal components from external moisture, oxygen, and impurities, preventing the deterioration of transformer oil and protecting internal parts from environmental influences. For on-load tap-changers, a separate on-load tap-changer tank is often used to house the diverter switch exclusively, as the arcing generated during its operation can accelerate oil degradation.

Mechanical Support: The tank serves as the framework for mounting external transformer accessories. Components like high-voltage and low-voltage bushings, conservators (oil conservators), gas relays, radiators, and various valves are all fixed onto the tank. The tank bottom is typically equipped with a base featuring pulling and towing attachments for ease of transport and installation.

Sealed Oil Tank vs. Unsealed Oil Tank: Key Differences and Applications

Sealed oil tanks are completely isolated from the atmosphere, using inert gas or flexible membranes to accommodate oil expansion. Non-sealed tanks, also known as free-breathing tanks, allow direct contact between oil and air. Each type has distinct advantages and is suited for different applications.

01/

Sealed Oil Tanks
Design Features
• Completely sealed from the atmosphere
• Use nitrogen gas cushion or rubber diaphragm for oil expansion
• Pressure-vacuum gauge for monitoring internal pressure

Advantages
• Minimal oil oxidation and moisture ingress
• Reduced oil maintenance requirements
• Suitable for harsh environments

Applications
• Large power transformers
• Transformers in polluted or humid environments
• Applications requiring minimal maintenance

02/

Non-Sealed (Free Breathing) Oil Tanks
Design Features
• Open to the atmosphere through a breather
• Use silica gel breather to remove moisture from incoming air
• Oil level indicator to monitor oil volume

Advantages
• Simpler design
• Lower initial cost
• Easy to inspect and maintain

Applications
• Small to medium-sized distribution transformers
• Areas with clean air and moderate humidity
• Applications where regular maintenance is feasible

Transformer Oil Tank: Hot-Dip Galvanizing Process

For carbon steel tanks, hot-dip galvanizing provides a more thorough corrosion protection method compared to standard painting. The entire tank is immersed in molten zinc, forming a dense zinc-iron alloy layer on its surface.

This coating not only provides barrier protection but also offers cathodic protection; even if the coating is locally damaged, the zinc layer corrodes preferentially, protecting the steel base metal.

The hot-dip galvanizing process is particularly suitable for transformers requiring long-term outdoor operation and infrequent maintenance, such as outdoor pole-mounted transformers or substations in remote areas.
