Transposed Conductor

Types of Transposed Conductor and Composite Conductor

Transposed Conductor
Continuously transposed conductor (CTC) or continuously transposed cable1) - a multi-strand conductor, in which each strand is transposed in order to occupy each possible position within the given cross-section area. Such conductors are used for reduction of copper loss caused by skin effect and proximity effect.

Composite Conductor
Composite conductors are "the composition of different metal conductors placed in a single strand" . The composite conductors are made up of various metals similar to conductors. These various metal conductors are placed in a single strand. This multiple composition of conductors in a single strand is termed as composite conductors. In composite conductors the current divides equally for each conductor and flows efficiently.

Features of Transposed Conductor and Composite Conductor
  • Composite conductors allow high conductivity.
  • The mechanical strength of composite conductors is more than solid conductors. Therefore, Sags are reduced and can be used for long distances.
  • The corona loss will be reduced with these conductors and these are highly resistant for corrosion.
  • These are highly reliable.
  • The proximity and skin effects are reduced with these conductors.

Structure and Design of Transposed Conductor and Composite Conductor

Composition

CTC consists of multiple (typically 5 to 80) individually insulated rectangular or trapezoidal wire strands.
These strands are bundled together and transposed, meaning their positions are periodically swapped along the length of the conductor.

Transposition

The transposition process involves rotating the positions of the strands within the bundle. This helps in averaging out the magnetic fields experienced by each strand, reducing localized hot spots and minimizing losses.

Insulation

Each strand is coated with an enamel insulation. The entire bundle may also be wrapped in additional insulation for protection and structural integrity.

Installation Considerations for Transposed Conductor and Composite Conductor

When installing advanced conductors with carbon fiber composite cores, correct handling is essential to maintain performance and avoid damage.

You' ll learn:
• How single-strand (single-wire) cores, made from pultruded carbon fiber rods, provide exceptional strength but require careful handling due to limited flexibility

• How multi-strand (multi-wire) cores offer improved bending behavior, allowing the use of standard installation equipment and increased resilience in the event of strand damage

Why selecting the right core type and observing proper bending radii are critical to ensuring safety and line reliability
